Abstract

Enterprises must change their processes, rules, products, and interfaces faster than ever, yet much of their business logic remains hard-coded in legacy systems. Every change then becomes a software project. Metadata-driven platform architecture addresses this by describing business behavior as metadata: entities, forms, rules, workflows, integrations, and policies, all interpreted at run time by generic engines. Changing behavior then becomes a matter of changing governed configuration rather than rewriting code. Building on prior work on metadata-centric platforms, configurable workflows, and event-driven processing, this article develops a reference architecture for such platforms. The architecture has five parts: a governed metadata repository, runtime engines that interpret metadata, an event backbone for real-time integration, intelligent process automation, and a governance layer that treats every configuration change as a controlled, versioned, auditable event. Using a design-oriented approach grounded in ten studies published between 2017 and 2022, the article maps the evidence base and presents the architecture and a configuration change lifecycle. It compares hard-coded and metadata-driven approaches across dimensions of agility, sets out a phased modernization path, and defines four dimensions of sustainability. It illustrates the architecture with an insurer modernizing a legacy policy and claims platform. It argues that metadata-driven architecture delivers lasting agility only when configuration is governed as rigorously as code.
