In many organizations, risk management runs alongside business operations rather than inside them. Risks are assessed in workshops, controls are tested months after transactions occur, and problems surface in audit findings long after they could have been prevented. Digitizing risk management in a separate system improves record-keeping but does not close this gap. This article examines how risk management can instead be integrated directly into the configurable enterprise workflows through which business is done. Controls then act at the moment transactions happen, compliance is monitored continuously, and risk information updates automatically. Drawing on research in business process compliance, continuous monitoring and assurance, internal control, configurable workflow architecture, and cloud resource scheduling, the article proposes six integration patterns. These are preventive control steps, continuous detective monitoring, risk-based routing, threshold escalation, automatic evidence capture, and periodic attestation. Each is classified by control type and timing. The article then presents a cloud architecture in which a shared control library is embedded in business workflows, supported by a compliance monitoring engine and by resource scheduling that prioritizes time-critical risk checks. A language model service uses structured prompts to explain control exceptions. Using a design-oriented approach grounded in ten studies published between 2004 and 2024, the article maps the evidence base and illustrates the approach with a retailer's procure-to-pay process. It argues that risk management becomes effective when controls live inside the workflows they protect, supported by cloud infrastructure that keeps them fast and reliable.
